Victoria powered by 50% renewable energy for the first time

Victoria hit a great milestone on the path to cleaner, cheaper energy last spring/summer, powering its electricity grid with 50% renewable energy for the first time.

New data out recently shows that “on three dates between November and January, renewables soared to more than 40 per cent of the state’s daily supply and went above 50 per cent in about 12 instances during two periods in mid-January and mid-November.”

This comes well ahead of the Victorian Government’s Renewable Energy Target of 50% by 2030.

While still a way off the renewable energy credentials of other states including the ACTTasmania and South Australia, Victoria’s share of renewable energy has grown from just 9% in 2010 to over 26% in 2020.
