What About Solar Panel Maintenance?

What About Solar Panel Maintenance?Sunrise SolarMon, 10/25/2021 – 8:00am

When installing solar panels on your property, it’s only natural for you to wonder what type of maintenance your system will need in the years to come. Fortunately, solar panels are extremely low maintenance. Here’s what you need to do to care for your system.

Periodic Cleaning

Generally speaking, the only maintenance you need to worry about for your solar panels is keeping them clean. If dirt, leaves, and other debris accumulates on the panels, it could limit their ability to generate electricity from sunlight. Because of this, it’s a good idea to clean off the panels a few times a year — or whenever they seem particularly dirty. To make this job easier, you could spray them with a hose or use a leaf blower to quickly clean things up without needing to go on the roof itself.

What About Snow?

When snow piles up on your solar panels, it can completely block sunlight, cutting off your solar power production. After a snowstorm, check the condition of your panels. A light dusting of snow that will melt away in the sun isn’t a cause for concern. However, thicker, packed-on snow should be removed with a broom or snow roof rake. Be careful if you need to go on a ladder to reach the panels — make sure the ladder is on a sturdy, even surface. Don’t overextend your reach and risk losing your balance.

With minimal maintenance needs and the potential to drastically lower your energy costs, installing solar panels is a no-brainer.
